Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Cambridge, Ontario | On-site
Salary: $85,000–$108,000 per year + profit sharing and benefits
OpTalent is partnering with an established manufacturer in Cambridge, Ontario, to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its R&D Engineering team.
This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to take ownership of product development initiatives, contribute to new product launches, and drive engineering improvements within a growing manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing electromechanical products from initial concept through detailed design, prototyping, testing, validation, and production.
We're looking for a technically strong, solutions-oriented engineer who can combine hands-on design expertise with project leadership and a commitment to product quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
The Opportunity
In this role, you will lead the development of new product offerings and improvements to existing designs, helping deliver reliable, cost-effective solutions that meet customer needs and applicable engineering standards.
You'll work closely with the R&D Engineering team and cross-functional stakeholders to translate product requirements into practical engineering solutions, resolve technical challenges, and ensure projects move forward successfully.
Key Responsibilities
Lead mechanical and electromechanical product development projects from concept and design through prototyping, testing, validation, and production implementation.
Take primary ownership of a new product development initiative, managing technical requirements, project milestones, and deliverables.
Develop and refine mechanical designs using SolidWorks CAD, including 3D modelling, detailed drawings, and engineering documentation.
Apply engineering analysis, including finite element analysis (FEA), to evaluate designs and support structural integrity, performance, and safety.
Develop and execute prototype testing and validation plans to verify product functionality, reliability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Apply design for manufacturability (DFM), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), tolerance stack-up analysis, and bill of materials (BOM) development throughout the design process.
Identify opportunities to improve product performance, reduce costs, simplify manufacturing, and strengthen overall product quality.
Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and other internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and support successful product launches.
Maintain high standards for design quality, technical documentation, safety, and engineering best practices.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering team members, contributing to a collaborative and accountable engineering environment.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a related discipline.
Active Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario is required.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in mechanical or electromechanical product design and development.
Demonstrated experience leading, or playing a significant technical role in, a product development project within a commercial or industrial environment.
Proven ability to manage engineering projects across the full product development lifecycle, from concept through production.
Strong proficiency in SolidWorks CAD, including 3D modelling and detailed engineering drawings.
Experience with FEA and applying engineering principles to meet structural, performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Strong working knowledge of DFM, FMEA, tolerance stack-ups, BOMs, and engineering change documentation.
Experience developing prototypes and creating and executing test plans for product evaluation and validation.
Strong problem-solving, project management, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accountability for project timelines and deliverables.
What’s Offered
Competitive base salary of $85,000–$108,000, based on experience and qualifications.
Participation in a profit-sharing program.
Employee benefits beginning after three months.
Employer RRSP matching of up to 2.5% after one year.
Access to an on-site gym.
Company-sponsored social events and team activities.
The opportunity to take ownership of meaningful product development projects and contribute to ongoing engineering innovation within a growing organization.
