About Mycionics
We are a strong, multidisciplinary mechatronics team where every member directly contributes to the product. We design, prototype, fabricate, and industrialize full robotic systems - spanning mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, AI/ML, and data analytics - and deploy them globally to customers across three continents.
The Role
We are seeking a versatile
Mechanical Design Engineer to join our mechanical design team. This role is best suited to a well-rounded designer capable of taking a project from an initial concept through to manufacturing. You will be designing robotic equipment - end-effectors, material handling systems, and related infrastructure to harvest and pack mushrooms.
We are looking for an adaptable engineer capable of managing shifting priorities in a dynamic environment. Your scope extends beyond CAD modeling; you will define actuator requirements, manage vendor relationships, and generate the detailed technical drawing packages necessary for production.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design: Design complex assemblies in SolidWorks, creating sheet metal, weldments, and machined components.
- Component Selection: Calculate loads and requirements to select appropriate electric and pneumatic actuators, motors, and sensors.
- Documentation: Create detailed 2D production drawings and generate accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Prototyping & Testing: Utilize 3D printing and rapid prototyping to validate concepts.
- Vendor Management: Communicate with suppliers to ensure parts are manufactured correctly and on time.
Technical Qualifications
- Experience: 2–3+ years of full-time industry experience. Note: While we value co-op experience, this role requires a candidate with a record of independent professional responsibility.
- CAD Proficiency: Advanced proficiency (preferably SolidWorks) is mandatory.
- Automation Knowledge: Experience designing mechanical systems and integrating electric and pneumatic actuators.
- Fabrication Knowledge: Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, specifically sheet metal design, weldments, and CNC machining.
- Detailing: High proficiency in creating clear, manufacturable drawings and understanding tolerancing.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- FEA: Experience performing stress and deflection analysis.
- Design Management: Familiarity with SolidWorks PDM.
- Robotics: Specific background in robotics or small-to-medium scale automation equipment.
Who You Are
- Adaptable & Resilient: You can navigate shifting priorities and manage multiple projects in a dynamic startup environment.
- Detail-Oriented: You focus on precision - ensuring every fit is checked and every part accounted for before releasing a design.
- A Clear Communicator: You are comfortable contributing ideas and articulating technical reasoning to a multidisciplinary team.
Why Join Mycionics?
- Global Impact: We deploy systems to customers on three continents, offering opportunities for international travel.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work in a facility where you see the physical machine being built next to you. You will collaborate closely with electrical, software, and AI teams to see your mechanical designs come to life.
- Benefits & Wellness: We offer a comprehensive benefits package including extended health care, dental, vision care, and a Health Spending Account (HSA).
- Environment: Based in the industrial hub of Kitchener with free on-site parking.
- Culture: A collaborative team environment with casual dress, company events, and social hours.
